Break Winding Down

Over the past week or so there have been a few happenings barely justifying entries but I simply never got around to it. Over the past several days, work has only been broken up by a couple new toys and a close basketball game. On a whim, Dad generously bought me a new monitor for my computer, a Samsung 226BW. I’d read reviews before and knew this was a good display, although there is some controversy surrounding it as the same model number has three different panels from three different manufactures. I received a “C” panel, the worst of the three. With proper calibration, however, it isn’t too bad, not for the $300 price tag anyway.Last night, the new Canon 30D I won on eBay arrived. I bought it to replace my 10D, which isn’t a bad camera but rather slow in use. The “new” one is also of use to me because of better high ISO performance. It does have two shortcomings compared to its older sibling, however. It’s a tad smaller and doesn’t feel quite as good in hand. The shutter actuation is also considerably louder on the 30D. On Wednesday night, Dad and I went to see Tulane’s basketball team play UAB. UAB is a good team. The game was close throughout and down to the wire. With just five seconds left, Tulane had a two point lead. UAB had the ball in the final seconds. A UAB player got to a far corner of the court behind the three point line, was surrounded by Tulane players and fouled with 1.6 seconds left. The UAB player got three free throws, made them all and put UAB on top 62-61 to win the game.

Tulane: 3 – SEC: 0

Dad and I went to work for about 11 this morning. The day wasn’t exceptionally busy. Dad and I didn’t get out of the office until about seven. Doc had car trouble that held us up.This evening, Dad and I went to the New Orleans Arena to see Tulane’s basketball team play LSU. Coming into this game, Tulane was 9-4 with two wins versus SEC teams. Both teams played hard, but Tulane wanted it more and beat LSU 68-63, the first win in basketball versus LSU in 26 years. In lieu of posting a detailed account of the game, I’ll defer to the news story on the game.Later this evening I watched David Letterman’s return to television with writers and Conan’s return without.

1000 Movies

New Years Day was nice and quiet. Dad cooked his traditional white beans and cabbage rolls. This evening, I watched my one thousandth movie, as indicated by my movie list. The movie was Rhapsody in August, one of Akira Kurosawa’s last movies. It was a good movie, not an incredible masterpiece for the landmark number, but it could have been a lot worse. Number 999 was Rush Hour 3.[edit]After further review and addition to the list, I found out that #1000 was actually I Am Legend.[/edit]

New Years Eve

This New Years Eve was a rather dull one. I didn’t go out and I didn’t want to go far out of my way to impose my company on anyone. I spent most of the day in front of the computer or TV. I finished watching the second season of The Wire. One of the caster wheels fell off my computer desk this evening and I spent about an hour replacing it. This isn’t the first time it’s happened so I had a couple spares. Maybe next year the December 31st post will be a tad less boring.
